The Abia State Government has raised alarm over an emerging electoral fraud plot allegedly sponsored by desperate politicians, accusing them of deploying agents to rural communities to illegally harvest Permanent Voter Card (PVC) details from unsuspecting citizens — in exchange for a meagre ₦10,000.
According to a special announcement signed by Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, the government described the act as a criminal scheme designed to compromise the authenticity of voters’ PVCs and render them invalid or ineligible to vote in the 2027 general elections.
Government sources revealed that agents of these politicians, acting under the false pretense of setting up e-wallets for empowerment, have been moving from ward to ward — particularly targeting rural dwellers — and collecting sensitive voter information.
“The unsuspecting victims are tricked into believing they are signing up for a government-sponsored financial empowerment scheme, when in fact, their data is being harvested for sinister political purposes,” the statement read.
The fake scheme reportedly offers ₦10,000 cash, a bait the perpetrators use to lure vulnerable citizens, especially the elderly and the economically disadvantaged.
The Abia State Government has condemned the practice in strong terms, describing it as a calculated attack on democracy, electoral integrity, and the civil rights of the people of Abia.
The government warned that any individual or political actor found to be involved — either directly or through proxies — would face “severe consequences beyond their imagination.”
“This government will not tolerate this level of electoral sabotage and political recklessness. It is criminal, it is shameful, and it will be punished,” the government declared.
The announcement clarified that Governor Alex Otti’s administration has been consistently implementing empowerment programmes across the state without political bias or data manipulation.
Key initiatives mentioned include:
Abia State Interest-Free Loan Scheme for over 10,000 Abians
TechRise Abia Project supporting digital innovation
Agricultural skill training for Abia youths in Nasarawa, with full government funding
Unlike the fraudulent empowerment-for-PVC scam, the state’s empowerment schemes are genuine, inclusive, and transparent, and are never conditional upon disclosing private voter information.
The government concluded the statement by urging Abians, especially rural communities, to avoid disclosing their PVC information to individuals or groups offering suspicious incentives.
“No genuine empowerment programme demands your PVC details. Protect your vote. Protect your future.”
The alert has sparked widespread conversation across Abia, with many urging security agencies to swing into action and unravel those behind what many now describe as a “pre-2027 voter suppression plot.”
