Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, has emphasised the importance of prioritizing welfare programmes, consistent financial aid, and empowerment initiatives for widows of fallen members of the armed forces, describing such measures as critical in honouring the sacrifices of those who risk their lives to protect the nation.

Dr Hamzat made the remarks during a dedicated Jumat Service held in commemoration of the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 15.

He called on the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to intensify efforts in providing support to the vulnerable widows left behind by military personnel.

The deputy governor also addressed the misrepresentation of Muslims as terrorists in global discourse, stressing that Islam is a religion of peace.

“If you are doing anything that hurts another person, you are not acting in line with Islam. The Qur’an teaches that harming one individual is like harming the entire community. Therefore, no true Muslim can intentionally inflict injury on others,” he said.

He encouraged Muslim leaders to actively promote positive narratives about the faith, advocating for educational and awareness programmes to counter misconceptions surrounding Islam.

Earlier in the service, Imam Saheed Ahmad, who led the Jumat prayers, highlighted that ensuring security is a collective responsibility, not solely the mandate of security agencies.

“The security challenges we face today require everyone’s involvement. If each individual behaves responsibly, speaks thoughtfully, and interacts safely within their community, it reduces the burden on security personnel. Every law-abiding citizen contributes to a safer society,” he said.

The Imam also paid homage to the men and women of the armed forces who sacrificed their lives to safeguard Nigerians, noting that their dedication merits both prayers and divine reward.

He cautioned against the circulation of rumours and unverified information, warning that such acts can compromise public safety.
