The Abia Renaissance Group, ARG, has cautioned Governor Alex Otti against actions and utterances capable of heightening political tension in the state.

The group urged security agencies to ensure that peace, tolerance, and citizens’ rights are protected as Abia heads into another critical political season.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Kelechi Uwakwe, and Secretary, Emma Nwangwu, the group expressed concern over the increasing use of inflammatory language in the political space and warned that such rhetoric, if not checked, could heighten fear and division among citizens.

The group urged all political leaders, including Governor Alex Otti and other stakeholders, to demonstrate restraint and lead by example in promoting peaceful engagement and respect for divergent opinions.

“Abia has enjoyed a reputation for peace and political tolerance. It is important that all actors uphold this legacy by ensuring that their public statements and actions foster unity rather than fear,” the group said.

The Abia Renaissance Group also called on security agencies to remain vigilant, investigate any reports of intimidation or harassment from any quarters and ensure that the political environment remains open, inclusive, and safe for all citizens irrespective of political affiliation.

The statement added that democracy can only thrive where citizens are free to express their views and participate in political activities without fear or undue pressure.

“We are confident that the relevant authorities — the Nigeria Police, the DSS, and the Office of the National Security Adviser — will take all necessary steps to maintain law and order, prevent escalation of tension, and guarantee equal protection for every Abia.

“We call on all security agencies to rise to the occasion and ensure that no one, including Governor Otti, is above the law. Abia belongs to all, not to a single man or party,” the statement concluded,” the group stated.

The ARG reaffirmed its commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at sustaining peace, justice, and democratic governance in Abia State.
