UMUAHIA — The political hemorrhage within the Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken another devastating turn as one of its prominent figures, Chief Dr. Emeka Kalu, a close ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has officially dumped the party.

Dr. Emeka Kalu, a well-known philanthropist, President of ECK Foundation, and a Senatorial hopeful for Abia North in the 2027 general elections, made his resignation public via a formal letter addressed to the PDP leadership in his ward, declaring his immediate withdrawal from the party.

His exit is seen as yet another blow to the already fractured Abia PDP, which has in recent months been losing influential figures in quick succession — a situation many observers have described as a political meltdown.

Emeka Kalu, who hails from Bende in Bende Local Government Area, has been a consistent voice within the PDP, advocating for internal reforms and democratic consolidation. He is widely perceived as a rising political force in Abia politics, particularly in Abia North Senatorial District.

In his resignation letter, Kalu wrote:

“I am writing to formally announce my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), effective immediately. After careful consideration, I believe it is in my best interest, both personally and professionally, to leave the party at this time.”

While he offered no explicit details regarding his next political destination, party insiders and political analysts believe Kalu’s departure is tied to the internal collapse within the PDP — both in Abia State and at the national level — especially the growing disillusionment with the party’s current leadership structure.

The former PDP chieftain, who has been instrumental in mobilizing grassroots support in Bende and beyond, further stated:

“I want to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to be a member and for allowing me to contribute to the party’s activities. I truly appreciate the experiences I gained during my time with the party.”

With Emeka Kalu’s departure, Abia PDP now finds itself in an even more precarious position. His resignation follows a trend of defection and internal dissatisfaction that has hit the party since its loss in the 2023 general elections.

Political watchers say Kalu’s move is strategic — a signal that the PDP’s grip on Abia North is slipping fast, and that the party’s days as the dominant force in the state may be numbered.

As a humanitarian, businessman, and youth mobilizer, Chief Dr. Emeka Kalu has maintained strong grassroots ties through his ECK Foundation, which has provided scholarships, economic empowerment, and health outreach programs across Abia State.

Though silent on his next political move, analysts speculate that Kalu may be aligning with a broader movement or coalition preparing to challenge both PDP and APC dominance in the region.

The PDP in Abia is yet to release any official response to the resignation.
